The Hospice

Is situated in Switzerland on the col du Grand Saint Bernard, on the boarder with Italy, at 2473m.

It welcomes hikers, skiers, pilgrims all year round.

In 1045, St Bernard of Aoste founded the hospice to come to the rescue of travellers exposed to the dangers of the mountain.

A thousand years of history. Since then, a religious community takes care of the welcome in this humanitarian refuge.

A place charged with history, a strategic pass between Italy and Switzerland rich of human passage such as Napoleon and the Romans.

 

A mountain touring paradise

This region is famous for its wild nature and mountains, for trekking. hiking or mountain touring in Switzerland.

The terrain here offers all you can imagine and more, but you need to earn your turns by rising to the summit ski touring or using your splitboard.

Come and experience this epic package that sits on two countries Switzerland and Italy.

Day 1

For those arriving by train:  Meeting point up to 11am at Orsières train station.

Transfer by taxi to car park next to the St Bernard tunnel entrance on the Swiss side (extra cost) .

For those arriving by car: Meeting point 12am at car park.

Here we will take some time to make a gear check with you.

We will provide you with a tutorial on the use of your safety gear and on avalanche and mountain awareness.

At 1.30pm we start at 1918m to hike up to the hospice at 2473m.

This will take around 2h30 for 555+m.

Arrival at hospice about 4pm.

Settle into the rooms and visit the hospice.

Short briefing for the next day.

Evening meal and rest

 

Day 2/3/4

Mountain touring around the Hospice as a base.

Breakfast at 8am, meet outside ready to hike at 9am

Hiking will be around 400 and 1200 positive vertical meters daily with more or less distance.

  •  Tête de Fonteinte 2774m
  •  Pointe de Drone 2950m
  •  Tête de Fenêtre 2820m
  •  Pain de sucre 2870m
  •  Mont Fourchon 2849m
  •  Mont Tellier 2940m
  •  Mont Mort 2860m
  •  Col de la fenetre de féret 2700m

Possible descents in neighbouring valleys, for confirmed riders only. Return to hotel via taxi (extra cost)

 

Day 5

Breakfast 8am, check out, meet outside ready to hike at 10am

Hike to Grande Chenalette or Mont Mort, around 1h30 then ride down to car park. -950m

Arrival at car park around 3pm and end of the adventure.

For those travelling by train transfer by taxi to Orsières  (extra cost for taxi).

  •  4 nights in a single private room or shared room at the Hospice with breakfast, pack lunch, evening meal.

 

Does not include

  • Transfer from Orsières train station to tunnel car park on arrival
  • Transfer from tunnel car park to Orsières train station on departure
  • Insurances
  • Anything that does not appear in the include section above
  • For confirmed skiers only, extra return taxi fee, if you wish to descend into neighbouring valleys

 

Accommodation – rating standard/comfort

The hospice is a big mountain refuge, you will be lodged either in a single private room or a shared room. Both are comfortable.

This depends on your choice, the size of your group and availability at the time of your booking

+ 20 mins taxi drive from Orsières train station to tunnel car park

  •  by car to Gd st Bernard tunnel’s outside car park on the Swiss side:

2h from Geneva, 1h20 from Lausanne, 2h from Turin, 2h35 from Milan, 1h20 from Chamonix, 45mins from Verbier.

Guide

You will accompanied by

One WSA Swiss Ski/Snowboard pro instructor/ freeride and mountain touring guide, with avalanche safety training and mountain first aid.

For five full days.

At the hospice

You will need casual clothing, your toileteries and a small towel for your life at the Hospice. Bedding and slippers are provided .

Watch what you bring as there are no waste disposal facilities at the Hospice, all waste must be taken with you upon departure.

Don’t forget all you bring with you, you will need to carry it up the mountain.

 

Ski/Snowboard touring Gear

We advise you to use suitable gear :

  •  Skis : wide powder skis minimum 100mm width, mounted with touring bindings, adjustable poles, skins and snow knives.
  •  Snowboard : split board with compatible bindings, telescopic poles, skins and snow knives or a normal board with snow shoes.

First aid box (with: Compeed plasters for rubbing, sports tape etc) safety blanket

Thin gloves and thicker gloves

Two hats

Thermo underwear and socks

Helmet and goggles

Sunglasses and high factor sunscreen

Thin fleece jacket

Thin down jacket for cold days and rest breaks on the summits

Shell pants and jacket (wind and waterproof)

Small thermos , a water bottle
